Who is Eligible For Hospice Care?
Confused whether you qualify for hospice care or not? Well, we have the answers!
Hospice care benefits are available to anyone who is living with a terminal illness and has a life expectancy of six months or less.
Eligibility Guidelines
Timely referral to hospice care increases the likelihood that the patient and family caregivers will benefit from compassionate end-of-life care.
To be eligible for hospice care, a patient must:
- Be living with a terminal illness and the family has elected palliative care instead of curative care
- The patient has less than 6 months to live as certified by a doctor
- The patient has an increasing dependence in accomplishing activities of daily livings (ADLs)
- The patient has lost more than 10 percent of body weight in the past 6 months
- Over the past 6 months, the patient has a documented deterioration in his clinical condition
Diagnosis That Qualify For Hospice
People often have a misconception that only cancer patients are eligible for hospice. However, this is not true. Here are a few of the diagnoses that qualify for hospice.
- End-stage dementia
- All forms of cancer
- End-stage liver disease
- End-stage pulmonary disease
- End-stage multiple sclerosis
- End-stage acute or chronic renal failure
- End-stage Parkinson’s disease
- End-stage AIDS
- Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
- Cerebrovascular Accident (CBA)
